A FIELD TEST IN THE CONTROL OF PINE PROCESSIONARY MOTH
(THAUMATOPOEA PITYOCAMPA SCHIFF.) BY DIRECT INTRODUCTION OF
INSECTICIDE INTO CATERPILLAR NESTS

Summary

The author recommends the described method in the control of Pine Processionary
Moth in the folowing cases:

1. When the other control methods are late, and the caterpillars have formed a
compact nest, and total defoliation is menacing.
2. When no control can be performed with a pack motor sprayer because the
trees are too tall.
3. When no control can be carried out by a hand-operated atomizer because of
unfavourable air currents making it impossible to deposit the insecticide into the tree
crowns.
4. This method of treatment is very suitable for controlling the Pine Processionary
Moth on solitaries and trees in parks up to a height of ca. 15—20 m.
The costs of such control do not exceed the costs of controls performed with a
pack motor sprayer. A drawback of such control method is the relatively great weight
of the rigid extensions, which at greater heights renders the work more strenuous
and the operator tires unduly.
