vljivale u masi (Pygaera anastomosis L., Dicranura vinula L. i dr.).
i broj potencijalnih štetnika u njima.

HIMERA PENNARIA L. (GEOMETRIDAE, LEPIDOPTERA) — A NEW INSECT
PEST ON POPLARS

Summary

In the spring 1963. a very heavy attack of Himera pennaria L. on the poplar
plantation »Vijuš« near Slavonski Brod (Croatia) was observed. The caterpillars of
this butterfly together with those of Monima incerta Hufn. (Noctuidae, Lepidoptera)
appeared in overpopupation and caused a complete defoliation on 12 ha of the
plantation.

Reports in the litterature indicate that Himera pennaria L. is known as a very
polyphagous insect damaging preferably to chestnut oak (Quercus sesiliflora Salisb.)
and hoa-nbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) in central Europe, but is generally of little importance.

In Yougoslavia it has been found in the forests of Pedunculate Ooak, Narrow-
leaved Ash and Common Elm (Quercus robur, Fraxinus angustifolia et Ulmus carpinifolia).
However the firts severe outbreak did not occur in these stands, but in poplar
plantation.

A brief morphological description of the more important external characters of
all stages of the insect has been given.

Himera pennaria L. has one generation a year in our country. The moths fly in
October and November and are active during the evening, beeing quiet on the trees
during the day. The female deposits its eggs in masses, both on the branches and
stams, but mainly on the thin branches and twigs. The eggs hibernate and hatch with
the advent of warm weather in the spring. The catterpillars feed and grow during
two month, becoming full-grown in May or early June, when they pupate under the
ground. The pupal stage lasts about 4 month.
