OBJECTIVES OF THE MANAGEMENT OF FORESTS IN THE LOVER LOCALITIES
OF THE EUMEĐITERRANEAN ZONE OF DALMATIA AND THEIR REALIZATION

SUMMARY

The lower localities of the Eumediterranean zone of Dalmatia (Dalmatian Islands
as well as the coastal zone of Dalmatia, excludinig some highest parts of Brač, Hvar
and Pelješac) distinguilsH therriselves by their climatic and soil conditions whence
the forests of this region display specific characters and Itherefore they ought to
promote special economic objectives.

In this region ali forests can be classified into high forests, macchias and garigues.
The high forests are formed by Evergreen Oak (Quercus ilex) and Aleppo-
Pine (Pinus halepensis). The Cypress (Cupres´sus semlpervirenis) occurs to a great
extent isolaited or in groups. The macchia is an evergreen coppice belonging in the
whole to the forest community Orneto-Quereetum ilicis (Horvatić), while the garigue
is an evergreen scrub composed of heliophilous plants whose community within
the frame of Evergreen Oak woods and scrubs (Querceta ilicis) represents a special
order (Cisto-Ericetalia) and the alliance (Cislto-Ericion) of the Adriatic garigues
(Horvatić).

Besides areas stocked with high forests, macchias and gariguefs there belong
to the forest lands also the areas covered with lithophilous and grass-liike vegetation
(rocky grounds).

The actual objective of management of forests depends on vvhether a particular
stocked area should serve to meet local needs or not.

1. For forests which should mainlv serve to supply the local market the objective
of the management should be in harmony with the local needs which may consists
in requirements for special assoiitments (house and naval construction timber, vine
props and oUhers) and fuelwood, or in requirements for fodder. The supply of construction
timber will be best secured by raising mixed forests of Aleppo-Pine
Cypress, Douglas Fir and Evergreen Oak in a rotation of 30—^50 years. The requirements
in fodder will be best meJt by growing shrublilke Leguminosae of high nutrient
value (Coronilla emerus and others) vithin the frame of thinly stocked -plantations
of Aleppo-Pine di>splaying a density of 0,3 to 0,4. In this case the Aleppo-Pine plays
a. meliorative role but besides thait it will give considerable yield,s.
2i. For forests and forest lands which ought not to serve mainly as Docal supplying
isources the objective of their management should consist in a continuous
production, of as high an amount of Pine resin (as a roain forest product) as posible,
as well as of valuable assortmerits (pulpwood and a little of construction wood).
