SUMMARY


The technique of reforestation of degraded Karst areas has been carried uot
well-nigh for a century by planting the stock into pits. Over this period the method
has frequently displayed gross failures. The autor discusses the causes of these
failures classifying them into three main groups: mechanical, climatic and biological.
He analyzes eaich group and draws out the essential causes responsible for
the respective failure. He establishes that among the mechanical causes the siže
of the pit and the medium of its walls are essential for the development of plants.
The siže of the pit, properties of the soil and the amount of moisture ane decfsive
for the success of planting.


Besides, he points to the previous method of comibating the climatic causes of
failure especially of droughts and comments on the thus far successful methods of
their control. Then he discusses the biological causes of failure as well as the
method of their combating.


Thereafter the author passes in review the methods of reforestation after
Malbohan, Ettinger, Obradović, Burlakov, Oraš, Simunović and others with a critical
reference to their advantages and efficacy.


Especially he discusses t!he prospects of the establishment of plantations of
fast-growing species on the degraded Karst and places under scrutiny the question
of the agrotechnical measures along with the application of machinery and fertilizers.
