A CONTRIBUTION TO THE AFFOEESTATION OF CONTINENTAL KARST
TERRAINS EXPOSED TO THE INFLUENCE OF EXTREME NE-WINDS (BORA)

SUMMARY

The source of the Zrmanja River is situated roughlv the border of the provinces
of Lika and Dalmatia lying in a tvpical´ continental Karst region. In this area
the climatic conditions of great extremes are prevalent. Besides the summer droughts,
which last 2—3 months also a temperature of —36° C was noticed there. The NE-wind
is here an almost daily phenomenon, reaching very often a speed of 100—130 km./h.
The soils are degraded, shallovv and very porous, with a deeply leached mineral
component of potassium and phosphorus.

Throughout this region there passes the railway line Ogulin—Split, and here are
also the cross-roads of the higvvays Gospić—Zadar—Split and Bihać—Zadar—Split.
During the vvinter snow periods there occurs regularly an interruption in railway
and road traffic because of heavy snow-drifts brought by the north winds.

In order to protect the traffic against the snow-drifts the Railwa;y Administration
undertook in this district to establish snow shelter belts by means of the following
tree species: Pinus nigra, Fraxinus Ornus, Ostrya carpinifolia, Ulmus campestris,
Tilia parvifolia, Acer obtusatum, Populus nigra v. pyramidalis, and Populus
canadensis. The succes of this afforestation work performed in »nests« spaced
1 X 1 X 1,5 m was complete only with the Austrian Pine while the other species
showed a tendency to stuntedness.

In order to improve the conditions in this silvicultural undertaking, the following
trial was carried out on an experimental plot: the plot was dug in the manner that
ali grasses and weeds between the »nests« were removed, and thereafter manured
with artificial fertilizers (superphosphate and KAS) in quantities of ca. 3 kg. per are.

This trial showed such promising results that in spite - of the adverse climatic
and soil conditions ali species on the plot started already in the year of planting
their normal growth.
