THE EXPERIMENTAL COMBATING THE PINE PROCESSION - MOTH
(THAUMATOPEA PITYOCAMPA SCHIFF) WITH THE APPLICATION OF
BACTERIAL PREPARATIONS (BACILLUS THURINGIENSIS)

SUMARY

The mechanical and chemical methods of combating the Pine Procession — Moth
(Thaumatopoea pityocampa Schiff) have thus far not yielded satisfactory results,
and besides, these methods have serious drawbacks.

In the laboratory were tested Bacteria (Bacillus thuringiensis) against the
caterpillars of the 3rd and 5th stages.

The results achieved with the application of bacterial preparations of German
origin Hoechst-AG-2802 and American origin Thuricide WP-173 are represented in
tables and graphs.

The German preparation Hoechst-AG-2802 was applied in the amount of 0,4,0/o
viz. 4 g. per 1 1. of diluent on caterpillars of the 3rd stage. Total, mortality was
achieved within 18 days. After 7 days a mortality of 55B/n was achieved, and already
after 12 da;ys a mortality of 88%. With the amount of 2 g. (0,2a/o) per 1 1. a 1000/o
mortality was also achieved within 18 days but the effect was rather retarded
(Graph. 1).

The same preparation in amounts of 2 and 4 g. per 1 1. acted very well also on
caterpillars of the 5th stage. With 2. g. per 1 1. in 18 days a 88´Vo mortality was
achieved, while with 4 g. a 100´Vo mortality accurred after 15 days (Graph 2).

With the American preparation Thuricide WP-173 a 9610/o mortality there was
achieved with 2 and 4 g. per 1 1. within 18 days (Graph 3). In both cases with the
amount of 4 g. there was achieved a faster action of the preparation.

In experiments carried out in Istria in a Pine štand of St. Marina near Labin
on 5 trial plots of 1 are the preparation acted wll in spite of adverse weather con-*ditions
prevailing in this region in that year (incessant rain). Spraying of the bacterial
suspension was carried out with the Fontan apparatus. During the time of treatment
the caterpillars were in their 3rd developmental stage. The treated plots were spaređ
defoliation, whereas the controls were complete!y defoliated (Figs. 16 and 17).

Consequently with the bacterial preparation a better and more efficient control
cf the Pine Procession-Moth is possible than with any thus far applied method. For
a broader application it remains to solve the question of adequate equipment for the
introduction of Bacteria into the attacked stands. In our opinion it will be best to
use a helicopter for this purpose in view of the configuration of the terrain and
the scattered distribution of the Pine stands.
