ekološkog i gospodarskog gledišta u obzir najpre spomenuta staništa, i

SUMMARY

Pubescent Oak does not occur in southern Dalmatia or it is quite rare on the
terrains stocked with stands of Evergreen-Oak, Aleppo-Pine and Cluster Pine, in
maguis, garrigues and other degradation forms of expressly evergreen forests.
Howerer, in the Arboretum of Trsteno which lies in in this vegetation zone occur
larger trees of Pubescent Oak. Among them has grown until recently also´ a giant
sample having a d. b. h. of 185 cm. The occurence and dimensions of these stems
can be explained by special soil conditions of the habitat. The configuration of the
terrain and crumbly parent material (Flysch) made possible the creation and accumulation
of deeper layers of fertile soil. The adjacent runnig water gave to the soil
the necessary freshness also during the greatest summer droughts. Therefore,
Pubescent Oak was able to compensate for the unfavourable influence of high
Mediterranean temperatures and the aridity of climate with very favourable edaphic
conditions thus achieving even an extremely large diameter. It has been established
that also within the evergreen belt of the southern Dalmatia Pubescent Oak occurs
in a greater number and achieves greater dimensions only on deep, fertile and fresh
soils which are to be found on flatter grounds (valleys, dolinas, depressions, sinks,
Karst funnels and the like). As these terrains represent at the same time the best
soils for agriculture, Pubescent Oak has been pushed back. Therefore, for a renewed
extending of this important forest tree species on the South Dalmatian Littoral
from the ecological and economical point of view there come into consideration
the first mentioned sites and those parcels which are not utilized by agriculture.
On other terrains do not exist ecological conditions for spreading of Pubescent Oak
in most cases owing to poor soil conditions. All attempts made hitherto to spread
this species on such grounds have failed, and it is considered that in future they
should not be undertaken.
